Bible Pickins – Joshua

This book cones across like a condensed version of the Books of Moses. The LORD tells Joshua which cities to attack and annihilate the people, again, and again, and again. The LORD tells Joshua that every bit of real estate the children of Israel walk on is theirs to keep. Just how much land do the children of Israel need?

Fast forward: UN General Resolution 181 is ratified on 29 November 1947. Palestine is to be partitioned into two states. In December Israel sends spies into Palestine gathering information: i.e. types of weapons, number of villagers, etc.

Joshua sends two spies to “view the land” all the way to Jericho. The spies wind up at a prostitutes house where she lives with her family. Rahab is her name. The king of Jericho demanded that Rahab bring the spies to him for questioning.  Rahab hides the spies on the roof of her house and covers then with flax. She tells the spies she has heard about their exploits across the desert and asks them not to harm her family as a reward for hiding them. The spies agree.
The spies left Jericho, went into the mountains, and returned to Joshua.
Joshua and his army, er I mean, the children of Israel marched upon Jericho “And utterly destroyed all that [was] in the city, both man and woman, young and old, and ox, and sheep, and ass, with the edge of a sword.”
Rahab and her family was safely escorted out of the city. “And they burnt the city with fire, and all that [was] therein: only the silver, and the gold, and the vessels of brass and of iron, they put itno the treasury of the house of the LORD.

Achan, from the tribe of Judah, confessed to Joshua that he had stolen a Babylonian garment, 200 shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold. ALL of Israel “stoned him with stones.”
Why would the LORD allow the children of Israel to plunder every city with his blessings? When it happens to them (Israelites) all heaven breaks loose.
The king of Ai and his people defended themselves from the oncoming hordes by leaving their city empty and chasing the children of Israel into the wilderness. The LORD, not liking people that protect their turf, told Joshua to stretch his spear and all of Ai will be his. The Israelites killed 12,000 men and women. They hung the king of Ai.

{10:12} Then spake Joshua to the LORD in the day when
the LORD delivered up the Amorites before the children of
Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still
upon Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon.
{10:13} And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until
the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. [Is]
not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still
in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a
whole day. {10:14} And there was no day like that before it
or after it, that the LORD hearkened unto the voice of a
man: for the LORD fought for Israel.

Hmmm, did the Earth stop orbiting the sun for a day or did it stop rotating?

Snooze time: An overlong recap of all the stuff the LORD gave to all the tribes.

Joshua dies at 110 years old.

Fast Forward: David Ben-Gurion, the first prime minister of Israel wrote this in his diary- “We will break Transjordan, bomb Amman, and destroy its army, and then Syria falls and if Egypt will still continue to fight – we will bombard Port Said, Alexandria and Cairo. There will be revenge for what they did to our forefathers during biblical times.”

Yikes. In all the stories I have read thus far NO ONE withstood the advances of the children of Israel. They dominated and defeated their opponents, took all their goods, livestock and treasures. Seems to me that David Ben-Gurion’s forefather’s did all right for themselves.
